Iran–Israel War Erupts in 2025, Ceasefire Attempt Underway

A full-scale conflict erupted between Israel and Iran in mid-June 2025, marking the most direct and intense confrontation between the two regional rivals in decades.

On June 13, Israel launched a surprise military operation, Operation Rising Lion, targeting key Iranian nuclear and military sites. Israeli officials claimed the strikes were aimed at halting Iran’s alleged accelerated nuclear program and preventing future attacks.

In response, Iran retaliated on June 19 by launching ballistic missiles toward Israeli cities, including a direct hit on Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva. Though most civilians had evacuated, over 50 were injured. Israeli authorities referred to the strike as a "war crime.".”

The United States became involved on June 21, launching strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Most of the missiles fired by Iran toward Qatar's Al Udeid Air Base were intercepted.. No casualties were reported, but tensions escalated further.

A temporary ceasefire was announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump on June 23, claiming both sides agreed to halt operations. However, fresh accusations of violations emerged hours later, with Israel alleging new Iranian missile fire—claims Tehran denies.

Casualties have risen sharply:

  • Iran reports over 600 dead due to Israeli airstrikes.
  • Israel has confirmed 28 fatalities and hundreds injured.

Despite international calls for restraint—from the EU, France, Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt—the truce remains fragile, with both countries vowing further retaliation if provoked.

Analysts warn that without a sustained diplomatic effort, the region risks spiraling into a broader war that could destabilize the entire Middle East.
